Grubhub Will Donate $100,000 to BronxWorks to Address Long-Term Needs of Families Impacted by Bronx Fire

Governor’s Office, Bronx Borough President, and others working with BronxWorks and Grubhub to identify need for funds and deliver aid for survivors

Funding will help 120 families re-establish their homes in the long-term following the devastating Bronx fire

(Bronx, NY) – The devastating impact of the horrific fire at Twin Parks North West in January continues to reverberate in the Bronx. As survivors continue on the road to recovery, Grubhub will donate $100,000 to BronxWorks to address the long-term needs of over 120 families, working with elected and local officials who helped identify the need for funds.

Since the fire, BronxWorks has been working closely with each family to identify their urgent and long-term needs as they navigate unimaginable loss. BronxWorks was contracted by the state to oversee intake, assessment and case management services in coordination with state, city and local elected officials, and several other community organizations.

The funding from Grubhub will support the longer-term recovery of surviving families as they rebuild their households, including by covering expenses related to childcare services, furniture, and education. The donation will also help families impacted by other recent Bronx fires.

“Grubhub and the officials who are helping to shepherd the donation are essential partners in our work to ensure Bronx families impacted by the fire not only have their immediate needs met, but have hope for the future,” says Eileen Torres, Executive Director of BronxWorks. “We are grateful for this gift because these families, who have experienced immense trauma, will continue to need ongoing support in the months ahead.”

“Grubhub is proud to partner with BronxWorks in its efforts to support families heartbreakingly displaced by the Twin Parks North West Fire earlier this year,” said Brett Swanson, senior manager, community affairs and social impact at Grubhub. “We look forward to working with BronxWorks and city and state leaders to help those families get back on their feet and ensure a stable future for the community.”

“As we emerge from the pandemic, New Yorkers need each other more than ever. Grubhub’s investment will go to BronxWorks, an organization that has committed their time, energy, and resources to those—and their loved ones—affected by the fire,” said Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin. “We New Yorkers are all in this together. Without committing to that notion, we miss out on the potential to be good stewards of our community and helpful to our neighbors. Moreover, we lose our own contribution to the critically important social fabric of our state. Despite how quickly the media cycle moves, we cannot leave folks behind. I’m glad to supportGrubHub today as they make that value crystal clear.”

“Following the horrific January 9th fire at Twin Parks North West Apartments, my office has been working day-in and day-out with representatives at all levels of government, as well as CVR, building management, different organizations and BronxWorks to ensure residents are receiving the needed resources for long-term recovery,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson. “This donation of $100,000 from Grubhub will help our families cover expenses as they work to rebuild their day-to-day lives after the unimaginable losses they suffered. I want to thank Grubhub for supporting our residents, and BronxWorks for their tireless work to help each resident.”

“I want to thank GrubHub for partnering with BronxWorks to provide this much-needed donation to the 120 families that were affected by the devastating Twin Parks’ fire last January,” said New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera. “We made a commitment to these families that will help them rebuild and I am grateful that this financial donation will be used to help address their long-term needs. We are also aware that the work is not over and we will continue to find ways to support them as they rebuild.”

“The road to recovery for the families impacted by the Bronx fire is paved with our unified commitment to delivering resources and providing ongoing support,” said New York City Councilmember Oswald Feliz. “To that end I am thankful to Grubhub for stepping-up during this pivotal time and demonstrating their dedication to this effort by donating $100,000 to Bronxworks. This donation will help ensure that the affected victims of the fire will continue to receive the assistance they need to move forward with their lives.”

“The devastation of the Twin Parks North West Apartments Fire on January 9 left the residents with long term consequences. My office, along with other representatives from all levels of government, have been working tirelessly to provide for these families during this crisis,” said New York City Assemblymember Yudelka Tapia. “I want to thank Grubhub for their $100,000 Donation to Bronxworks-an organization that has been ensuring that the families receive much needed resources.  Thank you to my colleagues in government, Grubhub and  Bronxworks for their commitment in helping these 120 families rebuild their lives after the devastating fire.”

“We salute our Chairman’s Circle member Grubhub for their extraordinarily generous donation to BronxWorks – a longtime Chamber member and cornerstone of the Bronx nonprofit community – toward their long-term fire recovery efforts,” said Lisa Sorin, President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce. “To see our members join forces in support of those who have faced such devastating loss has been a silver lining of this tragedy. This is what our Bronx business community is all about.

Grubhub Applauds Governor Hochul’s Push To Make To-Go Drinks Permanent In New York

Extending alcohol and delivery takeout can provide “vital lifeline” for bars and restaurants in wake of COVID-19

NEW YORK, Mar 3, 2022 – Following Governor Kathy Hochul’s announcement of new plans to support the hospitality industry on Wednesday, Grubhub, a leading food ordering and delivery marketplace, reinforced its support for making alcohol to-go drinks for restaurants and bars permanent. The effort, which is included as part of the Governor’s proposed budget, is one of a number of key steps outlined designed to modernize state liquor regulations and support small businesses hit hard by the pandemic.

“Grubhub strongly supports extending alcohol delivery and takeout in New York and we applaud Governor Hochul’s push to offer this vital lifeline for bars and restaurants as they get back on their feet,” said Amy Healy, vice president of government affairs at Grubhub. “While restaurants are open and capacity restrictions have been lifted, a full economic recovery is likely years away. Allowing restaurants and bars to offer takeout and delivery of beverages they are already permitted to sell on-premise is a commonsense approach that will give these small businesses a critical tool in their fight to survive and ultimately thrive.”

Grubhub partners with thousands of restaurants across the state of New York, where food delivery is part of the local fabric, and processed billions of dollars in sales to restaurants in 2021. Throughout the pandemic, the company has actively worked with local independent restaurants, providing them with an avenue to reach diners while helping partners and communities in need. In addition to direct marketplace support, Grubhub has provided millions of dollars in individual grants to restaurant partners to help them pay for overhead costs, employee retention, and more. Grubhub is also working to help those who are food insecure with a purchased meal program from local restaurateurs.

Grubhub Joining Effort to Cut Out Cutlery

Today Grubhub is officially joining the #CutOutCutlery campaign and committing to dramatically reducing the number of single-use plastics that enter the environment. In the coming months the Grubhub app and website will begin automatically defaulting to zero utensils and napkins with every order. While diners will still be able to request plasticware when needed, the move will generate significant savings for restaurants across the country.

“As we advance sustainable business practices across Grubhub and our industry, this important step will keep millions of unneeded pieces of single-use plastic out of the environment,” Devry Boughner Vorwerk, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, said. “We look forward to building on this commitment to sustainability in partnership with the diners and restaurants who rely on Grubhub every day.”

This action by Grubhub will remove millions of pieces of plastic cutlery from entering the environment annually. According to HabitsofWaste.org, organizer of the #CutOutCutlery campaign, 40,000,000,000 pieces of plastic cutlery end up in the waste stream per year, polluting our oceans and harming sea life. Sheila Morovati, Founder and CEO of Habits of Waste and #CutOutCutlery, has been a key partner to Grubhub as we have worked to develop this important sustainability feature.

“We applaud Grubhub for taking a significant step in dramatically reducing the amount of single-use plastic that ends up as unwanted waste and litter in our communities,” Morovati said. “Our partnership with Grubhub is a stellar example of how a system can be modified to change behavior, ultimately creating a new norm that automatically reduces waste and increases sustainability.”

Beyond the environmental benefits, removing plasticware is also another way Grubhub and our diners can generate cost savings for restaurants at a time when they need it most. Research has found that restaurants can save potentially thousands of dollars annually by reducing how much plasticware they use. The move is an important step in the journey Grubhub is embarking on towards more sustainable business practices.

New Benefits and Protections for Grubhub Drivers in California

The Protect App-Based Drivers and Services Act (a.k.a. Proposition 22) has taken effect in California and some changes are in store for the state’s Grubhub drivers. Starting today, drivers in California will have a number of new benefits and protections, including:

  • Guaranteed minimum earnings of at least 120 percent of California’s minimum wage for active delivery time before tip (or calculated using the local minimum wage if it’s higher). In addition, drivers will receive 30 cents per active mile driven.

  • Healthcare subsidy from Grubhub after a minimum of 15 hours of active driving per week, and a higher subsidy if a driver has 25 or more hours of active driving. The subsidy amount is based on an average monthly premium cost for a healthcare plan through the Covered California marketplace.

  • Mandatory rest periods of six hours after 12 hours of active driving (within a 24 hour period).

In addition to the guaranteed minimum earnings, Grubhub drivers will continue to receive 100 percent of tips they earn. We will also soon be rolling out the ability for diners to add a tip for the driver after an order is delivered.

Drivers in California will soon receive mandatory safety training as well, which will include information about food safety plus defensive driving and collision avoidance techniques. They will also receive information about sexual harassment prevention, and learn how to recognize and report sexual assault and misconduct.

Additional provisions of Prop 22 will continue to take effect in 2021 and further expand protections for delivery drivers and the public. The upcoming protections include occupational accident insurance and additional protections to cover medical expenses and lost income. More information will be released in the coming months.

Statement in support of indoor dining in NYC

“Grubhub strongly supports efforts to allow indoor dining in New York City. Opening doors to local restaurants opens doors to our communities. This step will have a positive and lasting economic ripple effect across the city – helping restaurant workers and families in every community. Grubhub CEO letter to congressional leaders in support of The RESTAURANTS Act of 2020

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi

Speaker of the House of Representatives

The Honorable Kevin McCarthy

Republican Leader, House of Representatives

The Honorable Mitch McConnell

Majority Leader, US Senate

The Honorable Chuck Schumer

Minority Leader, US Senate

Dear Congressional Leaders:

Grubhub is the leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery marketplace with the largest network of restaurant partners in the United States, as well as more than 27 million active diners. With over 225,000 restaurant partnerships in more than 4,000 cities, we are proud of our ability to help drive local revenue by connecting diners with the food they love from their favorite local restaurants.

These are uncertain times, and while we can’t predict what tomorrow will bring, we recognize our responsibility to do all we can to help keep restaurant doors open. Our business is based on restaurants like the local coffee shop, the burrito joint, the sandwich place, or that great wing spot thriving. And over the last six months, we’ve also seen restaurant owners and delivery drivers fill an essential need in their communities. As a result,we’ve made it our mission to support restaurants and spent $100 million in the second quarter alone to support restaurants, drivers and the communities they live in.

However, the plight of restaurants is of such a magnitude that it requires federal intervention. Now is the time to show these struggling restaurants support by passing the bi-partisan RESTAURANTS Act of 2020. Grubhub stands ever-appreciative of the leadership of Representative Blumenauer and Senator Wicker for introducing this important legislation in both the House and Senate and strongly urges all members of Congress and the Senate to sponsor and pass this critical proposal.

According to the Independent Restaurant Coalition (IRC), the food service industry directly employs over 11 million people across the country, and indirectly supports 5 million more workers up and down the supply chain. Now, up to 85% of independent restaurants face the grim reality that they may have to close their doors permanently. This important legislation provides for a $120 billion Revitalization Fund that will immediately infuse desperately needed capital into local economies and will help small independent restaurants and the broader restaurant community rebuild after months of closure and what will be months of reduced revenue as a result of social distancing. The Revitalization Fund would generate $248 billion in net economic benefit, and save the jobs of millions of workers in the service industry. It is estimated that one in four jobs lost during the pandemic was from the food and beverage industry, disproportionately impacting people of color and single mothers.

Grubhub again encourages all members of Congress to support The RESTAURANTS Act, and looks forward to working together to protect our restaurants and re-open our country.

Thank you for your continued leadership.

Sincerely,

Matt Maloney

Grubhub CEO letter to President Trump in support of independent restaurants

The Honorable Donald J. Trump
President
The White House

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House of Representatives
United States Capitol
Washington, DC 20515

The Honorable Mitch McConnell
Majority Leader
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Mr. President, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader McConnell:

Grubhub is the leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery marketplace with the largest network of restaurant partners in the United States, as well as more than 22 million active diners. With over 100,000 SMB restaurant partnerships across the country, we are proud of our ability to help drive local revenue by connecting diners with the food they love from their favorite local restaurants.

During this unprecedented time in our country, restaurants are on the front lines of the struggle to continue to feed Americans. Since the crisis began, Grubhub has been working with state and local officials around the country to support our local independent restaurant community and lend support for efforts to keep the doors open to our restaurants for delivery and take-out.  And while we applaud our government leaders and their efforts to minimize the COVID-19 impact and keep the American people safe, we know that without these release valves of delivery and pickup, many of our nation’s independent restaurants will not survive.

To provide our independent restaurants some relief, Grubhub has launched an aid package which includes deferred payments for our independent restaurants providing much needed cash flow relief until this crisis is over. We have also established the Grubhub Community Relief Fund which will pay cash grants to organizations supporting independent restaurants and food delivery drivers.

However, we know that the needs of the restaurant industry during this unprecedented time are beyond our control. The National Restaurant Association anticipates sales to decline by $225 billion during the next three months alone, which could prompt the loss of between five and seven million jobs. I am calling on you to support the $325 billion aid package proposed by the NRA which would establish a much needed industry recovery fund, provide for business interruption insurance, as well as much needed loan and tax relief. Specifically, the proposal would authorize the following:

  • The Department of Treasury to create a $145 billion Restaurant and Foodservice Industry Recovery Fund.
  • $35 billion for Community Development Block Grants for Disaster Relief (CDBGDR) assistance.
  • $100 billion in Federally-Backed Business Interruption Insurance
  • $45 billion in expanded access to effective, efficient and affordable federal and conventional loans.
  • $130 million in Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA)

If enacted, these measures would ensure that restaurants have the necessary liquidity and access to critical financing to help them survive the dramatic loss in profits caused by COVID-19.

Restaurants are the heart and soul of our communities and we must do everything we can to get them through this time of incredible uncertainty.

Thank you for your leadership.

Sincerely,

Matt Maloney

Grubhub and Major Cities Across the U.S. Launch Economic Relief Effort up to $100 Million for Independent Restaurants and Delivery Partners Impacted by COVID-19

Mayors of Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Boston and Portland Team with Grubhub to Suspend Fees from Independent Restaurants
Grubhub Sets up Charitable Fund for Impacted Drivers and Restaurants

CHICAGO, March 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — In collaboration with the mayors of large cities across the United States who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 response efforts, Grubhub today announced it is temporarily suspending collection of up to $100 million in commission payments from impacted independent restaurants nationwide.

Grubhub’s initiative will provide immediate and substantial cash flowrelief to qualified independent restaurants — restaurants that make up the majority of Grubhub’s 350,000+ restaurant community and drive more than 80 percent of the company’s orders.

Matt Maloney, Grubhub Founder and CEO said: “Independent restaurants are the lifeblood of our cities and feed our communities. They have been amazing long-term partners for us, and we wanted to help them in their time of need. Our business is their business — so this was an easy decision for us to make.”

Grubhub has also created a fund that will enable proceeds from its Donate the Change program to go toward charitable organizations that support restaurants and drivers impacted by the COVID-19 health crisis. The program will allow diners to round up the change from every order and donate it to the Grubhub Community Relief Fund — with donations from Grubhub+ (and Seamless+) members matched by the company. Grubhub has been raising more than $1 million dollars per month through Donate the Change.

Grubhub will work with local city officials to identify the organizations that can utilize the funds and to consider other support programs during the pandemic.

“The City of Chicago is deeply concerned about the risk COVID-19 is placing on the health of our residents and communities, as well as the impact it’s having on our working families and neighborhood economies and restaurants,” said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “That is why we applaud corporate leaders like Grubhub who are stepping up with practical measures to support small businesses and their employees. Now more than ever, we must work together to ensure hardworking Chicagoans receive the support they need to thrive while also staying safe, secure, and healthy.”

In Chicago, where Grubhub was founded in 2004 and is headquartered today, there are more than 10,000 restaurants on the platform, and thousands of drivers bringing delicious food from these restaurants to hungry diners. This relief fund will provide support for food industry workers, which are anticipated to become among some of the most impacted by the economic losses due to coronavirus and social distancing practices. This includes residents at small, neighborhood-based businesses like Chicago’s Home of Chicken & Waffles, based in Bronzeville.

As dine-in traffic is expected to slow up to 75 percent over the next few weeks, restaurants will rely on pickup and delivery orders to stay in business. “We have seen revenue decrease in the past week as a direct result of our customers staying home,” said Darnell Johnson, owner of Chicago’s Home of Chicken & Waffles. “Grubhub has helped us generate more delivery and takeout orders as our customers’ dining habits have changed. This has helped us continue serving our loyal customers and our employees can continue living a sustainable lifestyle.”

“Banding together during hard times, putting people over profit, and supporting our local businesses is a model we should all follow, and I thank Grubhub for leading the way,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“Restaurants are a pillar of the San Francisco small business economy and so important to the culture of this city,” said Joaquin Torres, Director of San Francisco’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development. “We are committed to doing everything in our power to support them in this time of crisis, but if we want to come through this public health emergency intact, we’ll need more private sector partners to follow Grubhub’s lead, do the right thing and invest locally to mitigate this crisis.”

These initiatives follow a series of measures taken by Grubhub to keep restaurants, diners, and drivers safe during the outbreak – including contact-free delivery and health and safety guidance to drivers, restaurants and diners. Additionally, Grubhub offers pickup from the largest restaurant network in the country, which helps individuals who might feel safer acquiring food on their own.
