Our History

1999 Seamless is founded by two hungry lawyers, fed up with using out-of-date paper menus to order food to their office


2004 Grubhub is founded by two hungry web developers, looking for an alternative to flipping through paper menus to order takeout


2006 Grubhub’s co-founders win the University of Chicago Edward L. Kaplan New Venture Challenge


Seamless acquired by Aramark


2007 – 2011 Grubhub secures five private funding rounds from leading venture capital investors including Benchmark Capital


2011 Grubhub acquires Dotmenu, the parent company of AllMenus and campusfood


Seamless acquires MenuPages


Seamless spun-off as a separate company to Aramark’s shareholders


2012 Grubhub debuts in-restaurant technology platform to streamline order taking


2013 Grubhub and Seamless merge


2014 Grubhub goes public and begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker, GRUB


2015 Begins offering Grubhub delivery capabilities in more than 50 U.S. cities


Acquires DiningIn, Restaurants on the Run and Delivered Dish

2016 Announces new branding, visual identity and logo for Grubhub


Introduces Apple Pay and Google Pay as checkout options, and launches Grubhub gift cards


Acquires LAbite


Unveils new ratings and reviews system to give diners and restaurants even more insights


2017 Rolls out point-of-sale integration to simplify online order management and delivery for restaurants


Acquires Eat24, Foodler and select OrderUp markets


Partners with Yelp, Groupon, TripAdvisor, InterContinental Hotels Group and Amazon Alexa to reach diners in more places they’re inspired to order


2018 Enters national partnership with Yum! Brands, including $200 million investment


Acquires LevelUp, Tapingo and the remaining OrderUp markets

2019 Celebrates 20th anniversary of Seamless and 15th anniversary of Grubhub
