Grubhub Marks Hunger Action Month with New Chicago Initiatives and Expands Existing Programs

At the start of this year, Grubhub outlined three areas of focus for its philanthropic giving model, including an emphasis on helping to close the hunger gap. During Hunger Action Month this September, we are making an impact with new partnerships and efforts in Chicago, New York and in other key cities.

According to this year’s August Consumer Food Insights Report, the U.S. continues to confront food insecurity, with 14 percent of the population considered food insecure. In addition to our year-long programs and partnerships that help bridge the hunger gap, this month we are rolling out several new efforts. These include a new Grubhub microgrant program that will support Chicago nonprofits, a partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (Food Depository) that will significantly increase meal distribution in areas of the city with high levels of food insecurity, serving as the official Hunger Action Month sponsor of Food Bank for NYC’s (FBNYC) activities and hosting a series of Serving the City (STC) events.

Here’s how Grubhub is showing up in communities across the country.

In our hometown of Chicago we’re introducing two new initiatives.

  • New $1 million microgrant program to support local nonprofits tackling food insecurity. Grubhub is introducing a microgrant program, with operational support from the Food Depository and Nourishing Hope, benefiting Chicago-based nonprofits. The program, made possible by the Grubhub Community Fund*, will direct up to $1 million in grant funding to organizations providing access to food and meal services. We’ll open up the application period for interested nonprofits in early October.
  • More nutritious, made-from-scratch meals distributed through the Food Depository’s expanded prepared meal programs. We are partnering with the Food Depository to aid in the expansion of their prepared meals program. These meals support Chicago families, older adults, people with disabilities and individuals with medically tailored diets. In early 2024, the Food Depository will open an expanded facility with eventual plans to prepare, source and distribute up to 10,000 meals per day. The partnership will also support the Food Depository’s work with food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters as they meet elevated demand for food assistance.

“Hunger Action Month is all about raising awareness and taking action to alleviate food insecurity for our neighbors. Currently, one in five households in the Chicago Metro area faces food insecurity. We are incredibly grateful for valued partners like Grubhub whose support will allow us to continue ramping up our daily production of healthy, made-from-scratch meals as we plan to open our new prepared meals kitchen in 2024,” said Jill Zimmerman, Chief Philanthropy Officer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. “We’re also excited by the microgrant program and Grubhub’s commitment to support a strong and resilient network of food access programs across Chicago and neighboring communities.”

We’re bringing the STC program to Boston and sponsoring FBNYC’s Hunger Action Month campaign.

  • Expanding our STC program in Chicago, New York and Boston. Since launching the program in 2022, we’ve held nearly 70 STC events across the country and distributed nearly 35,000 meals to communities. Now, we will expand the program to Boston, distributing meals to public schools in the area.
  • Partnering with FBNYC as the official Hunger Action Month sponsor in New York City. $100,000 in matching funds, made possible by the Grubhub Community Fund, will support FBNYC’s Hunger Action Month awareness effort. The donation match campaign aims to bring attention to FBNYC’s mission to end hunger by organizing food, information and support for community survival and dignity.
Grubhub’s Serving the City purchases and provides meals in communities across New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia, with a Boston expansion coming soon.

Raising awareness about hunger in America and inspiring everyone to take action and help close the hunger gap expands far beyond Hunger Action Month.

  • Advocating for systemic change with policymakers in Washington. While our direct programs and partnerships are primarily at the city level, our team also advocates for policies and programs at the federal level to help achieve national impact. This past year, the Grubhub Government Relations team has continued efforts to advance the implementation of the Food Donation Improvement Act and specific policy recommendations to address food insecurity within the Farm Bill.
  • Extending and deepening our work with food-focused GCF partners. For several years, we have partnered with organizations like MEANS Database, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, Tacombi Foundation, Union League Boys and Girls Club in Chicago to support various food rescue and hunger relief programs that directly support communities across the country. In 2022, we partnered to distribute over 500,00 meals and rescued over 2.8 million pounds of food through partnerships funded by the Grubhub Community Fund, and we are on track to grow our impact helping more individuals and families get access to the food and additional program services.

“Grubhub is focused on partnering with local and national organizations to build out and support meaningful programs directly impacting individuals, families and communities, ” said Brianna Morris, Grubhub’s Sr. Manager of Community Impact. “Through the Grubhub Community Fund and other efforts, we are growing our impact in our hometown of Chicago, expanding our existing partnerships, and creating access to essential needs and opportunities within the communities we serve. ”

Hunger Action Month is a time to build awareness, but this work continues throughout the year in communities all across the country. As we deepen and expand our partnerships, we’ll continue to look at how we can achieve the greatest impact across all of our impact focus areas, including how we support independent restaurants and create opportunities for individuals working in the hospitality industry.

Grubhub Expands Services to Restaurants With On-Demand Delivery

Self-delivery restaurants can now request Grubhub Delivery in real time

CHICAGOSept. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub, a leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery platform, announced today that it is offering a new product feature, On-Demand Delivery. This service gives self-delivery restaurants on the Grubhub Marketplace the option to request a Grubhub delivery driver to facilitate the last-mile logistics on a per-order basis whenever needed.

This feature is currently in pilot in markets across the country, including Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, D.C., Seattle, Chicago and Denver. Previously, restaurants couldn’t toggle between self-delivery and Grubhub delivery, but with the new automated feature, they can switch between both options on orders. Restaurants in the pilot program that use Grubhub delivery will be charged a flat delivery fee of $5 per order.

“Whether a restaurant could use extra support to keep up with demand during peak hours or cover for a driver who called in sick, we want to give restaurants even more help to run their business and deliver a great experience to customers,” said Liz Bosone, vice president of restaurant success at Grubhub. “We’ve heard from our restaurant partners that they welcome the convenience of this feature and like having alternate fulfillment options that don’t require hiring additional staff. We’re proud to add this feature to our suite of tools and services.”

On-Demand Delivery joins the suite of services that Grubhub offers its restaurant partners, including Supplemental Delivery, which allows self-delivery restaurants to expand their delivery boundary and reach more diners with the help of Grubhub drivers. Order Frequency Insights Added to Grubhub for Restaurants Portal

Back in May, we introduced three updates within the Grubhub for Restaurants (GFR) portal to drive more value to our restaurant partners that help them grow their business: Customer Insights, Self-Serve Refund Requests and Self-Serve Photoshoot access. Building on the Customer Insights tool where restaurants can filter their sales and order metrics by new or returning diners and Grubhub+ or non-Grubhub+ customers, we’ve added Order Frequency Insights within GFR. With these ordering insights, restaurant owners now have visibility into how often their customers are ordering from them.

To get started, users select the “Insights” tab in GFR and can then view customer order frequency history from the last 90 days within the Customer Insights page. They can segment customers out by new or returning diners and Grubhub+ or non-Grubhub+ customers. Further highlighting the value of their Grubhub+ customers, restaurant owners can view their average number of orders per Grubhub+ customer and their most loyal customers, defined as those who rank in the top 10% of their order volume. And to drive action, users can click the links at the bottom of the page to view more details on how to run promotions and loyalty programs.

“Our restaurant partners leverage Grubhub as an acquisition tool to attract new customers, build relationships with these customers, and drive retention. They’ve been asking for more tools that help them do all three,” said Liz Bosone, vice president of restaurant success at Grubhub. “With our latest addition of Order Frequency insights within the Grubhub for Restaurants portal, we’re providing our partners with tools and data that will empower them to not only understand who their most loyal customers are, but how to best engage with them to drive more frequent ordering.”

Grubhub Brings Amazon’s Just Walk Out Technology to Campus Partners

Students save time by skipping the checkout line and are automatically charged via their synced campus payment method in the Grubhub app

CHICAGO, Aug. 29, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub Campus announced today that Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology is now available at Loyola University Maryland, the first Grubhub-partnered campus to deploy the technology.

With Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, Grubhub campus partners are able to offer a frictionless experience that allows students, faculty and staff to shop at convenience stores on campus and skip the checkout. This means no lines, no need to scan products and no fuss. Students simply scan a QR code in the Grubhub app to enter the store, and the technology detects what shoppers take from or return to the shelves. When guests have completed their shopping experience, they are able to leave the store without having to wait in line and the payment will automatically be deducted from their meal plan, declining account balance or other stored payment methods linked to their Grubhub account when they leave the store.

“Our installation with Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology is another example of how we are strengthening our relationship with our campus partners with cost-saving technology and driving student adoption,” said Eric Ferguson, chief operations officer at Grubhub. “The services and products we provide for our campus partners are designed to enhance and improve the dining experience, and we’re excited to offer this innovative and frictionless technology to our campus partners.”

“We are thrilled to bring Just Walk Out technology and Grubhub together at Loyola University Maryland,” said Jon Jenkins, vice president of Just Walk Out technology, AWS Applications. “With Just Walk Out technology and Grubhub, students, faculty, and staff will find a convenient way to purchase the items they need with a frictionless shopping experience so they can quickly get back to their studies.”

“Loyola is proud to partner with Grubhub and Amazon to bring this technology to our students,” said John Coppola, vice president for finance and administration and treasurer for Loyola University Maryland. “We strive to bring innovation to our campus, and this is a perfect example of our drive to lead in technological applications for our students, faculty, and staff.”

Just Walk Out technology is made possible by artificial intelligence (AI) like computer vision and deep learning techniques, including generative AI, to accurately determine who took what in any retail environment. Amazon built synthetic datasets to mimic millions of realistic shopping scenarios—including variations in store format, lighting conditions, and even crowds of shoppers—to ensure accuracy in any environment.

Grubhub partners with 300 higher education institutions and is the only food ordering and delivery marketplace that works with campus dining programs. This gives students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup. Amazon Prime members in the U.S., including members of Amazon’s discounted membership for college students—Prime Student—can receive a one-year Grubhub+ trial for free. Grubhub+ includes $0 delivery fees from hundreds of thousands of restaurants and discounts including exclusive member-only offers on their orders.

Grubhub Partners with The Hatchery Chicago® to Help Entrepreneurs Open Their Doors on Chicago’s West Side

Grubhub was born and bred in Chicago. We opened our doors in the Windy City in 2004 on the belief that we could support and enable local restaurants to grow through innovation. Nineteen years later, Grubhub has helped more than 14,000 local restaurants serve more than one million diners spanning neighborhoods across Chicago.

One way we say thank you to the community that gave us our start is by giving back. That’s why we are kicking off a new $300,000 partnership with The Hatchery Chicago®, a leading non-profit incubator dedicated to fostering successful food and beverage businesses on the West Side of Chicago.

Grubhub’s partnership with The Hatchery Chicago includes:

  • Sponsoring a pitch competition and awarding the winner with 1-year fully paid access to the private Grubhub Kitchen at The Hatchery.
  • Developing new educational materials to guide The Hatchery Chicago’s entrepreneurs interested in utilizing third-party delivery to grow their businesses.
  • Providing philanthropic support through the Grubhub Community Fund*  to The Hatchery Chicago’s Sprouts Incubation program.

“Our partnership with The Hatchery Chicago is especially exciting because their mission to help local entrepreneurs build and grow successful businesses is exactly what we do at Grubhub every day with our own restaurant partners,” said Liz Bosone, Grubhub’s Vice President of Restaurant Success. “Not only are we offering financial support, but teams across Grubhub are working with The Hatchery Chicago to offer deeper, meaningful engagement that can help put their entrepreneurs on a path to sustained growth and success.”

Earlier this year, we outlined three focus areas for our philanthropy and community impact work. This partnership directly aligns with two: supporting independent restaurants to positively impact communities and creating opportunities in the hospitality industry.

“Since opening our doors on the West Side of Chicago in 2019, The Hatchery Chicago has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs get their starts in our kitchens and learn the necessary skills to launch and grow viable businesses,” said Natalie Shmulik, The Hatchery’s Chief Strategy & Incubation Officer. “On top of our existing services, our partnership with Grubhub allows us to look at new ways to support our community of entrepreneurs, including helping them successfully leverage online marketing and delivery resources to increase efficiencies and generate revenue.”

The Hatchery Chicago is our newest community impact partnership in Chicago. Through the Grubhub Community Fund, we also partner with local organizations like Nourishing Hope and Union League Boys & Girls Club, and national organizations like the Restaurant Strong Fund to administer restaurant grant programs in Chicago and across the country. To date, the Grubhub Community Fund has enabled more than 400 grants totaling more than $4 million to independent restaurants and awarded nearly $660,000 to nonprofit organizations in Chicago.

We’re proud of the impact we’ve had in our hometown and of this new collaboration. And, we are excited to bring it to life! In the coming months, Grubhub and The Hatchery will announce details for the first pitch competition to win access to the private Grubhub Kitchen and additional joint events. We have a lot of work ahead, and we’re excited about what’s to come.

New benefits available on eligible orders by members include lower service fees and a 5 percent credit back on pickup orders. Members will still receive unlimited $0 delivery fees on orders over $12, donation matching on Grubhub+ orders and member-only offers from restaurant and convenience partners. With these new benefits, members can get an additional average monthly savings of 20 percent.*

That’s exactly what we’ve offered with the relaunch of Grubhub+,” said Launika Raykar, vice president, loyalty, customer engagement and partnerships at Grubhub. “Reinforcing our commitment to addressing diner feedback in all facets of our business, we took the best features from the original Grubhub+ program and our previous pilot programs to drive measurable value and tangible savings for members.”

As a valuable and growing diner segment, Grubhub+ members order more frequently and have significantly better retention than non-members. They are also highly engaged — using their membership and $0 delivery fees to order more than just restaurant meals, including convenience items. This behavior benefits the Grubhub marketplace more broadly since merchants receive more orders and delivery partners have more opportunities to earn.
