Grubhub Partners with The Hatchery Chicago® to Help Entrepreneurs Open Their Doors on Chicago’s West Side

Grubhub was born and bred in Chicago. We opened our doors in the Windy City in 2004 on the belief that we could support and enable local restaurants to grow through innovation. Nineteen years later, Grubhub has helped more than 14,000 local restaurants serve more than one million diners spanning neighborhoods across Chicago.

One way we say thank you to the community that gave us our start is by giving back. That’s why we are kicking off a new $300,000 partnership with The Hatchery Chicago®, a leading non-profit incubator dedicated to fostering successful food and beverage businesses on the West Side of Chicago.

Grubhub’s partnership with The Hatchery Chicago includes:

  • Sponsoring a pitch competition and awarding the winner with 1-year fully paid access to the private Grubhub Kitchen at The Hatchery.
  • Developing new educational materials to guide The Hatchery Chicago’s entrepreneurs interested in utilizing third-party delivery to grow their businesses.
  • Providing philanthropic support through the Grubhub Community Fund*  to The Hatchery Chicago’s Sprouts Incubation program.

“Our partnership with The Hatchery Chicago is especially exciting because their mission to help local entrepreneurs build and grow successful businesses is exactly what we do at Grubhub every day with our own restaurant partners,” said Liz Bosone, Grubhub’s Vice President of Restaurant Success. “Not only are we offering financial support, but teams across Grubhub are working with The Hatchery Chicago to offer deeper, meaningful engagement that can help put their entrepreneurs on a path to sustained growth and success.”

Earlier this year, we outlined three focus areas for our philanthropy and community impact work. This partnership directly aligns with two: supporting independent restaurants to positively impact communities and creating opportunities in the hospitality industry.

“Since opening our doors on the West Side of Chicago in 2019, The Hatchery Chicago has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs get their starts in our kitchens and learn the necessary skills to launch and grow viable businesses,” said Natalie Shmulik, The Hatchery’s Chief Strategy & Incubation Officer. “On top of our existing services, our partnership with Grubhub allows us to look at new ways to support our community of entrepreneurs, including helping them successfully leverage online marketing and delivery resources to increase efficiencies and generate revenue.”

The Hatchery Chicago is our newest community impact partnership in Chicago. Through the Grubhub Community Fund, we also partner with local organizations like Nourishing Hope and Union League Boys & Girls Club, and national organizations like the Restaurant Strong Fund to administer restaurant grant programs in Chicago and across the country. To date, the Grubhub Community Fund has enabled more than 400 grants totaling more than $4 million to independent restaurants and awarded nearly $660,000 to nonprofit organizations in Chicago.

We’re proud of the impact we’ve had in our hometown and of this new collaboration. And, we are excited to bring it to life! In the coming months, Grubhub and The Hatchery will announce details for the first pitch competition to win access to the private Grubhub Kitchen and additional joint events. We have a lot of work ahead, and we’re excited about what’s to come.

Grubhub Relaunches its Loyalty Subscription Program, Grubhub+

Reimagined program delivers new features and added savings tailored to meet member needs

CHICAGOJuly 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub is doubling down on savings, rewards and unique experiences for diners with the relaunch of Grubhub+, its loyalty subscription program that gives members access to unlimited $0 delivery fees on eligible restaurant and convenience orders over $12.

New benefits available on eligible orders by members include lower service fees and a 5 percent credit back on pickup orders. Members will still receive unlimited $0 delivery fees on orders over $12, donation matching on Grubhub+ orders and member-only offers from restaurant and convenience partners. With these new benefits, members can get an additional average monthly savings of 20 percent.*

Expected in the coming months, members will receive additional benefits that will help them celebrate some of life’s most joyful moments, including milestone rewards, month-long member savings and new Grubhub+ offers including the Fuel Rewards program at Shell. “We continually gather feedback from our diners, and they’ve told us they want more value, recognition and elevated service from their subscription programs. That’s exactly what we’ve offered with the relaunch of Grubhub+,” said Launika Raykar, vice president, loyalty, customer engagement and partnerships at Grubhub. “Reinforcing our commitment to addressing diner feedback in all facets of our business, we took the best features from the original Grubhub+ program and our previous pilot programs to drive measurable value and tangible savings for members.”

As a valuable and growing diner segment, Grubhub+ members order more frequently and have significantly better retention than non-members. They are also highly engaged — using their membership and $0 delivery fees to order more than just restaurant meals, including convenience items. This behavior benefits the Grubhub marketplace more broadly since merchants receive more orders and delivery partners have more opportunities to earn.

The hit YouTube series will give fans in New York City the opportunity to taste Hot Ones’ famed wings and hot sauces via a new pop-up virtual restaurant exclusively through Grubhub

New York, NY June 29, 2023: Can you handle the heat? On the heels of the milestone 300th episode of First We Feast’s Hot Ones featuring John Mulaney that dropped today, Grubhub is inviting New Yorkers to take the hot seat with the launch of the first-ever Hot Ones delivery pop-up. In partnership with First We Feast and powered by Mealco, the exclusive pop-up will give diners in select locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens the opportunity to get their hands on the show’s famous spicy chicken wings and hot sauces starting today, June 29th.

Only through Grubhub can New Yorkers experience Hot Ones at home via menu items tossed in the famed fiery sauces. The menu features diners’ choice of delicious 6-piece or 12-piece wings, in addition to righteously spicy crispy chicken or plant-based chicken sandwiches, coated in sauces tested by A-list stars during the current season of the show. The spicy lineup of hot sauces fans can taste include:

  • Los Calientes™ Rojo: Spicy and tropical!
  • The Classic™ Chili Maple: The perfect balance of sweet and heat.
  • The Classic™ Garlic Fresno: Garlic and Fresno chili get the party going!

Diners can savor a full meal by making it a combo with french fries and their choice of drink. For those that may need help turning down the heat, the Hot Ones pop-up menu also features an Apple Fritter topped with sweet milk for dessert.

“We’re fired up to bring the first-ever Hot Ones pop-up and delivery experience to diners first in New York City,” said Liz Bosone, Grubhub’s VP of Restaurant Success. “The opportunity to deliver the impressive cultural fandom of Hot Ones directly to fans’ front doors through this collaboration is just another way Grubhub is committed to making moments more joyful with delivery.”

The special Hot Ones delivery pop-up in NYC celebrates eight years and 300 Hot Ones episodes featuring hot questions and even hotter wings with host Sean Evans on First We Feast with guests such as Julia Louis Dreyfus, Pedro Pascal and Margot Robbie. Grubhub is the first delivery partner to introduce Hot Ones’ virtual restaurant.

“First We Feast is excited to bring the Hot Ones experience directly to our fans in NYC through our pop-up delivery with Grubhub to celebrate the 300th episode,” said First We Feast General Manager Chris Schonberger. “For years, fans have asked to try the iconic Hot Ones menu for themselves, and we can’t wait to bring the heat straight to their doors through our collaboration with Mealco’s virtual restaurant technology for this epic milestone.”

Menu items are available for a limited time each day while supplies last for delivery only in select locations across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Diners in those locations can check out the full Hot Ones menu via Grubhub. Expanded locations to be announced soon. Hours of operation vary per location.

Grubhub and JOCO Officially Open Hub for Delivery Workers in NYC

In April, Grubhub announced a series of new initiatives that aim to support delivery workers while making e-bike usage safer and more sustainable in New York City – with one key  initiative being a formal partnership with delivery e-bike rental platform, JOCO. This week, we officially unveiled a new, centrally-located co-branded hub – JOCO Concierge Sponsored by Grubhub – to kick off our pilot program and provide NYC delivery workers a place to recharge both their e-bikes and themselves.

While many New Yorkers plan to slow things down as summer approaches, we know delivery workers will be working as hard as ever. We recognize the work our delivery partners do is absolutely critical to helping Grubhub serve our diners. They help us ensure hungry diners across the city get the food they want, when they want it, how they want it – every time. Providing a place where our NYC delivery workers can take care of themselves and their equipment is an important step in continuing to invest in our partners and everything they do for Grubhub and our diners.

Starting today,  Grubhub bikers with active JOCO credits can make a pitstop at the facility located at 259 Bowery in Soho during the peak hours of 12:00-8:00 pm to take advantage of a host of amenities. From battery swapping and bike rentals to complimentary delivery gear and essential amenities like restroom facilities and phone charging stations, the new Grubhub x JOCO hub is a one-stop shop for all delivery rider needs, providing riders with a safe and seamless experience on the job. With the launch of the JOCO Concierge sponsored by Grubhub, we aim to empower delivery workers in one convenient hub.

“When it comes to our delivery partners, of course safety is absolutely key, and that’s why this hub from Grubhub and JOCO combines elements like safe battery exchange with amenities that help riders rest and recharge,” said Amy Perlik Healy, vice president of Government Relations at Grubhub. “This is an evolving effort for us, and Grubhub is continually working with important partners like JOCO as well as city leaders to explore new ways to support delivery workers and communities across New York City.”

And, starting next week, Grubhub will offer monthly credits to our top tier bikers that deliver in Manhattan, giving them free access to more than a thousand safety-certified JOCO e-bikes. Grubhub riders will also have access to more than 55 additional JOCO hubs for continuous safe e-bike storage, battery exchange, and delivery rider gear. Currently spread across Manhattan and Queens with plans to add new locations soon, the hubs will serve as the only rest stops available to NYC’s more than 60,000 delivery workers.

“We’re thrilled to work with Grubhub and bring the JOCO Concierge sponsored by Grubhub to life,” said Jonathan Cohen, co-founder of JOCO. “Through this hub and our initial phase of the program, we’ll be able to provide Grubhub delivery workers with access to safer, more sustainable e-bikes while giving them the unique opportunity to take advantage of a state-of-the-art facility with gear and amenities. We’re excited to launch this alongside our other hubs around New York and look forward to expanding across all boroughs to continue to provide for delivery workers throughout all of New York.”

Grubhub’s partnership with JOCO is just one piece of our broader E-Bike Lifecycle safety program. In addition, a $100,000 grant from the Grubhub Community Fund is helping to support the FDNY Foundation’s fire safety campaign which includes educational resources on the safe handling of lithium ion batteries. The safety of our drivers is important to us, and we continue to work with NYC leaders, the FDNY, and our industry partners to collectively inform delivery workers and the broader public about safe e-bike use.

School’s Out for Summer! Grubhub Takes a Look at How Students Ate During the 2022-2023 School Year

Burritos and (very) hot sauce: this dynamic duo tops the charts for college students

CHICAGOJune 14, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — With summer in full swing, Grubhub Campus is revealing dining trends from its more than 270 partnered schools across the country. Findings from the first ever 22 – ‘23 Delivered: Campus Edition demonstrate how students’ preferences go way beyond cheeseburgers and pizza. From burritos delivered morning, noon and night, to 1 million orders of waffle fries, college students craved comfort, convenience and heat.

Grubhub is the only food ordering and delivery marketplace that works with campus dining programs to give students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup. As students reset and recharge ahead of the ’23 – ‘24 school year, let’s take a look back at how they fueled up for a year full of studies.

Breakfast and Beyond, Burritos Satiate Students

The burrito: a portable, timeless and filling food item – perfect for the on-the-go scholar. On trend with Grubhub’s national ‘22 Delivered findings, burritos were devoured as the number one order among college students. This fan favorite proved to be versatile – a top selection at breakfast with sausage, and in the form of a bowl at lunchtime.

Top Food Items Ordered Nationwide

  1. Burrito
  2. Cheeseburger
  3. Chicken quesadilla

Tuesday lunch

Top Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Orders

Breakfast

  1. Donut
  2. Sausage burrito
  3. Bacon, egg and cheese bagel

Lunch

  1. Burrito bowl
  2. Mac and cheese
  3. Spicy chicken sandwich

Dinner

  1. Pad thai
  2. Boneless wings
  3. Miso soup

Late Night Inferno

Burritos certainly had an impact on late-night orders. This year, the top three most popular late-night add ons brought the heat! Clearly college students are craving spice, with the hottest sauce taking the number one spot.

Top Late-Night Add Ons

  1. Fire sauce
  2. Hot sauce
  3. Mild sauce

Who is ordering all that hot sauce late at night? Boston University ranked as the number one school with the most late-night orders. Not surprising since Boston was named the city with the most late-night orders from the ‘22 Delivered national report last year. In addition to all of those sauces, students were big fans of french fries and chicken tenders for a nightcap!

Schools with the Most Late-Night Orders

  1. Boston University
  2. Virginia Tech
  3. Case Western Reserve University

A Walk Down Memory Lane

Whether it’s DIY mac or restaurant mac, students can’t get enough. A comforting bowl of mac and cheese dominated lunchtime orders, coming in second only to the burrito bowl. Students demonstrated their love for this childhood dish by also making it the most ordered convenience store item. Talk about a taste of nostalgia!

Top Convenience Store Orders

  1. Mac and cheese
  2. Ice cream
  3. Steak and cheese taquitos

Feast of Greens

While burritos, burgers and quesadillas were the most popular orders across all campuses, three schools notably preferred a traditionally healthier fare. Dressing on the side, please!

Top Salad Ordering Schools

  1. University of South Carolina, Columbia
  2. University of Delaware
  3. Auburn University

Extra Cheese, Please

Whether it’s just a slice or an extra large pie, college students sure love their pizza. From coast to coast, these three schools had a hankering for some cheesy goodness.

Schools with the Most Pizza Orders

  1. California Polytechnic State University
  2. North Carolina State University
  3. Colorado State University

But First, Iced Coffee

With demanding schedules, early classes and finals, it’s no surprise college students consume cup after cup of caffeine. When it comes to their cup of joe, students prefer their caffeine served cold. The top three coffee drinks ordered this past year on campus were all cold beverages. On the rocks, please!

Top Coffee Orders

  1. Cold brew
  2. Vanilla iced coffee
  3. Frappuccino

 Balling on a Budget

One thing about college students is that they sure know how to stretch a dollar (or in this case, a nickel). Special shout-out to the student at Auburn University, Montgomery, who placed the smallest order of the school year with 1 order of penny pancakes, costing $0.03. It’s hard to beat that deal!

They See Me Rollin’

Autonomous deliveries are all the rage, and over the last year, Grubhub has partnered with three robot delivery providers — Starship, Cartken and Kiwibot — to offer this delivery to its campus partners. Robot deliveries kept hungry students well-fed, with hand-held favorites ranking as the top three most ordered items.

Most Ordered Items Delivered by Robot

  1. Chicken tenders
  2. Bagel
  3. Burrito

Schools with the Most Robot Deliveries

  1. The Ohio State University
  2. University of Arizona
  3. University of Notre Dame

Special Instructions

It wouldn’t be like college students not to leave fun delivery notes within their orders. Here are some of our favorites that we think belong in the order notes Hall of Fame (the LOTS OF SAUCE comment is all of us):

  1. CALL me if the door person does not wake up (they may be asleep in their chair but we love them).
  2. Leave outside and text me DO NOT GIVE TO SHORT FAT MAN WITH PLATINUM BLONDE HAIR he is my ROOMMATE and he will SAY he is ME do not believe his lies.
  3. BLEU CHEESE OR RANCH BUT A LOT OF SAUCE PLEASE I LOVE YOU.
  4. Bogart Hall, scream as loud as you can when you get here please.
  5. Call me when you arrive. I will stumble out of the building.

That’s a (Burrito) Wrap Until Next Year!

In addition to students enjoying campus favorites, all students at Grubhub-partnered schools are eligible to receive a free Grubhub+ membership, where they receive unlimited $0 delivery fees on eligible orders*. With this membership, students get access to donation matching on Grubhub+ orders through Grubhub’s Donate the Change program, which raised more than $21 million in 2022. Additionally, all students with an Amazon Prime or Prime Student membership in the U.S. are eligible to receive a free year of Grubhub+, regardless of if their school is affiliated with Grubhub’s Campus Dining program. And, if Prime members sign up by July 5th 2023, they will receive an extra year free.

A message from Howard Migdal, Grubhub CEO

This message was sent to all Grubhub employees at 7:00 am CT on Monday, June 12th, 2023.

Hi everyone,

When I joined the Grubhub team a few months ago, I wanted to dedicate time to understanding our business and market, and crystallize how we could best position ourselves to succeed.

Over the last few months, I met with Grubhub teams to learn about the business from the ground up; I spoke to restaurants and diners to understand their needs – and challenges – when using our service; and I spent substantial time with the leadership team looking into our opportunities for growth.

There is no doubt whatsoever that we have a solid foundation in place and an immense opportunity ahead of us – but it is also clear that we need to make some tough decisions in order to maintain our competitiveness, deliver the best possible service for diners and our other partners, and be successful for the long-term.

As a result, today we have made the very difficult decision to reduce headcount at Grubhub by around 15%, leading to the loss of roles for approximately 400 of our passionate and talented teammates.

This is really tough news to share, and I know it will come as a shock to you. I wanted to be the first to let you know our reasons why, explain how we will support everyone through this transition and what happens next, and talk about the future of our business.

Why we made this decision

We operate in a highly competitive and constantly evolving industry, and we need to continually look at whether we are set up in the right way to deliver for our diners, restaurants and delivery partners. While our business has grown since our 2019 pre-pandemic levels, our operating and staff costs have increased at a higher rate.

Rightsizing the business for where we are now – which includes ensuring we have the right resources and organizational structure focused on the right priorities – will allow us to be more agile, make bolder bets and take advantage of all of the opportunities on our doorstep.

What happens right now

Employees who are impacted by this decision will be notified over the next several hours. While I acknowledge that this is extremely difficult, our focus will be on prioritizing people’s wellbeing and supporting them in their next steps and future success.

To those who are leaving, I want to sincerely thank you for your hard work and dedication to the company. This is by no means a reflection on anyone’s efforts, and Grubhub would not be the business it is without your contributions.

To those who are staying, I know today will be hard for you, too. We will come together in the next few days to talk more about the news and our future together in more detail. In the meantime, please talk to – and look out for – each other.

Looking to the future

The hard decisions we are making now will enable us to take advantage of the significant opportunity ahead of us.

From everything I have learned in the last 15 years in the online food industry and over the past few months at Grubhub, I have so much confidence in our ability to succeed. Grubhub is an incredible marketplace with tens of millions of customers, hundreds of thousands of restaurants and a strong logistics network operating from coast to coast.

We disrupted the restaurant industry and changed the way Americans order food forever, and that innovative, entrepreneurial and competitive spirit is part of our DNA. I’ve seen it over and over again as I’ve met with so many of you. I’m certain that with the right strategy, relentless execution and a commitment from all of you, Grubhub’s future is bright.

Grubhub and Homewood Suites by Hilton Bring Food Delivery to Guests at U.S. Hotels

On the menu: A seamless experience ordering meals for delivery from Grubhub’s network of more than 365,000 restaurants while staying with Homewood Suites

CHICAGO and MCLEAN, Va.June 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub, a leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery platform, and Homewood Suites by Hilton, the award-winning extended-stay brand, are taking the guesswork out of ordering a meal while traveling through their latest partnership. The companies will bring off-premises dining options to guests through the Grubhub app at nearly 500 Homewood Suites locations across the country.

Guests at Homewood Suites properties in the United States that don’t have on-site dining options will be able to order from local restaurants and convenience stores on Grubhub via geolocation and QR codes around the property that take them directly to the Grubhub Marketplace. For a seamless experience, the hotel location and courier drop-off instructions will automatically populate at checkout. Guests who were a part of a pilot program at select Homewood Suites locations earlier this year noted higher overall satisfaction with their delivery experience — from the speed of delivery to the packaging of the food and options for delivery, including no contact delivery.

“Travel and food go hand-in-hand, and we’re excited to work with Hilton to be their go-to meal delivery provider and make it easier for guests to discover new restaurants from the comfort of their room,” said Eric Ferguson, chief operations officer at Grubhub. “Whether a guest is craving a meal, wants a quick snack or needs an item they may have forgotten at home, they’ll be able to access Grubhub’s robust network of restaurants and convenience stores at the touch of a button. From our pilot of this program, we saw that orders from small and mid-sized businesses accounted for more than half of all orders, and we’re proud to support local communities and restaurants through this partnership.”

“We are delighted to team up with Grubhub as we continue to innovate new ways to enrich the guest experience and enhance the food and beverage offerings available to guests of Homewood Suites by Hilton,” said Rick Colling, global head of Homewood Suites. “This distinctive collaboration offers guests access to great local restaurants, helping them feel at home during their stays while exploring local communities through food.”

The Grubhub partnership is now available at all participating Homewood Suites hotels across the U.S. Homewood Suites guests that affiliate with their hotel will receive one free month of Grubhub+, Grubhub’s loyalty program that provides diners access to unlimited $0 delivery on orders of $12+.
