GrubHub Simplifies Mobile Food Ordering

GrubHub Redesigns its Mobile apps with an Updated iPhone and new Android app

Chicago, Ill. (Oct. 7 2010) — GrubHub, an industry leader in the online restaurant delivery space, announces updates to their iPhone app and the release of a new Android app. Through GrubHub’s mobile app, users can order food on the go and read reviews from more than 4,000 restaurants in 13 cities.

“Whether you’re ordering lunch, dinner or even dessert, you have an abundance of options,” said Mike Evans, GrubHub co-founder and COO.  “The new mobile apps make ordering food from anywhere that much easier.”

Users can search their current location or enter an address, and GrubHub will display every restaurant that will deliver to that location. Users can order food directly from the app or call the restaurant directly.

With the updated iPhone app, GrubHub users can now log into their existing accounts or create a new account from their mobile device and take advantage of new, more personalized functionality which includes:

  • Using your phone’s GPS to find out which restaurants deliver to you.
  • Viewing menus, reviews and ratings before placing your order.
  • Searching for restaurants that deliver in 13 major cities: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Oakland, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Denver and Boulder.
  • Searching for specific items, restaurants and cuisines from the home screen.
  • Saving multiple addresses so you can order from home, office, local bar or university dorm.
  • Viewing past orders and reordering with one tap.
  • Saving credit card information so you can leave your wallet at home.

GrubHub has also added new functionality for Android and other smartphone users. This week the company released a public beta Android app that is the first app to offer mobile food ordering from local independent restaurants. This app allows Android users to search by their current location, find a specific food item or restaurant name, read reviews and order online.

And for people who don’t want to install an app on their phone, GrubHub released significant improvements to their mobile website. GrubHub’s mobile website uses the latest features of HTML 5, including geo location and Client-Side storage, which will make reordering from GrubHub on a mobile phone even easier

The iPhone app can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store® and GrubHub for Android is available at the Android Market on your phone. Both mobile apps are free to download.

GrubHub first launched its iPhone app in February 2009 and over the past 6 months the company has seen a 300% increase in its install base.

“Mobile orders comprised of 1 percent of our total revenue last year,” said Evans. “With the growing popularity of our mobile apps, we project mobile orders will comprise 10 percent of our sales by the end of 2010, roughly $7 million.”

GrubHub Named Among Inc. Magazine’s 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies

CHICAGO, IL (August 24, 2010) —GrubHub, an industry leader in the online restaurant delivery space, has been named to Inc. Magazine’s prestigious 500 list, which ranks the nation’s fastest-growing privately held companies. The Chicago-based company came in at No. 5 in the food and beverage category and No. 229 among 500 companies. The coveted list will be published in the magazine’s September issue.

Founded in 2004, GrubHub reported revenues of $4.03 million in 2009 –an impressive 1,577% growth over the last three-years — and has tripled its employee size over the last year to 65 employees.

“I’m honored to be included in a list once occupied by such powerhouses as Visa, Zappos and Microsoft,” said Matt Maloney, GrubHub co-founder and CEO. “It has been an amazing experience to be a part of such tremendous growth over the last three years.”

GrubHub shows consumers all the local restaurants that deliver to them and allows them to order directly online, by phone or through its iPhone app. Online users can browse and compare menus options and prices, see which restaurants are open, read reviews, and take advantage of coupons. The site currently services Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Boulder, Washington D.C. and Oakland and has a network of over 13,000 restaurants on its site.

Restaurants working with GrubHub get an average of 20 percent more delivery orders through the site. Despite the recession, the company is experiencing rapid growth in all of its markets and is on track to bring $70 million in food sales to its restaurants this year.

“We’re going to double our orders this year,” Maloney said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that we are driving more business to our restaurants in the midst of a real economic recession. It’s been a success story for everyone involved.”

GrubHub.com Launches in Seattle

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) June 16, 2010 — GrubHub.com (http://www.grubhub.com) is helping Seattle diners explore more local restaurants right from the comfort of their homes. The website, which shows people all the neighborhood restaurants that deliver to them and allows them to order directly online, by phone, or through its iPhone app, announced its Seattle launch today.

The online service shows menus for more than 200 Seattle area delivery restaurants and is absolutely free to use. People can use the site to discover new restaurants, find unique coupon offers, compare menu prices or place their orders. GrubHub.com, also operating in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., L.A. and Portland, has a network of over 12,000 restaurants on its site.

“Seattle has a diverse restaurant scene, so ordering delivery doesn’t have to mean just pizza and burgers when you’re looking for a quality meal at home,” said Matt Maloney, GrubHub.com co-founder and CEO. “Whether you’re in the mood for grilled cheese or sushi, you can get exactly what you’re craving.”

“The majority of restaurants you’ll find on our site are mom-and-pop owned and operated, and over 50 percent of them don’t have online ordering capabilities on their own websites,” said Maloney. “By giving these owners the tools they need to make it easier for people to find their menus and order online, we help drive more consumers to their businesses.” Restaurants working with GrubHub.com get an average of 20 percent more delivery orders through the site. The company is experiencing rapid growth in all of their markets and is on track to send over $70 million in food sales to their restaurants this year.

“We recognize these are tough times for restaurants,” said Maloney. “And restaurant owners are great at running their business, but they really don’t have the time or resources to stay on top of ever-evolving online technology. That’s where GrubHub.com comes in.” During the first month in Seattle, first-time GrubHub.com users get $10 off their first online order by visiting http://www.grubhub.com/SeattleSneakPeek.

San Diego Launch

PR Newswire March 3, 2010 — As American consumers continue to forego expensive nights dining out, GrubHub.com (http://www.grubhub.com), the only service that shows people all the local restaurants that deliver and allows them to order directly online or by phone, announced their beta launch in San Diego, CA today.

The online service shows menus for more than 300 San Diego area delivery restaurants and is absolutely free to use. Budget-conscious diners can use the site to discover new restaurants, find unique coupon offers and compare menu prices. GrubHub.com also operates in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and L.A..

During these challenging economic times, GrubHub.com is also helping independent restaurant owners increase their business and attract more new customers.

As the recession drags on, fewer consumers are dining out. According to research consultancy Technomic, fine dining restaurants nationwide could see their sales fall 15 percent this year, with a 2.5 percent drop in the broader restaurant industry.

“GrubHub.com’s online service provides an easy and efficient way for people to order from their neighborhood restaurants, and it drives profits directly to those businesses,” said Maloney. “Restaurants working with us get an average of 20 percent more delivery orders through our site.”

“L.A. has such a diverse restaurant scene, so ordering out doesn’t have to mean just pizza and burgers,” said Matt Maloney, GrubHub.com co-founder and CEO.

GrubHub.com offers online ordering to unique restaurants like Truly Vegan on Hollywood Blvd., whose menu consists of entrees that are 100 percent vegan.

GrubHub.com processed $20 million in delivery orders last year and in the first half of this year the service has seen a 60 percent increase in food orders in their existing markets compared to last year.

“We’re probably going to triple our orders this year,” Maloney said. “It’s an incredible growth trajectory in the midst of a real economic recession. We also recognize this is a challenging environment for restaurant operators and we know our services will drive more business to them.”

GrubHub.com Launches in D.C.

Washington, D.C. — Constantly ordering the same delivery gets both boring and awkward, because how weird is it that just this past Monday, you also didn’t have any ones to tip with? See all your options, with GrubHub.

Already exploded in a few select cities, Grub’s just-launched DC site contains a menu database for 600+ delivery-friendly restaurants; the on-the-ground team’s so thorough, they’ve even scanned in just-opened spots’ menus with hand-drawn price corrections still on them — you can almost see the proprietors waking up to the marketplace realities, while remaining oblivious to Whiteout.

Just enter your address, and Grub’ll return all spots within your gluttonous geographical reach, a list that can be winnowed by criteria like “have coupons”, “accept credit cards”, and, to prevent tear-inducing teases, “are delivering now”.

Most of the restos will take orders directly through Grub, who’ll also let you make custom requests on particular menu items (“extra wasabi”, “extra waaaaaaaasabi”, etc); while registration isn’t required, those that create a free profile can take advantage of a virtual menu drawer to store favorites, receive Grub recommendations, and review past orders — perhaps the only evidence that last night at 3am, things got Panormous.

To celebrate their arrival in the DC, Grub’s offering new users $10 off their first order, savings that’ll make it even sweeter when you find a horde of new delivery guys to stiff. Get $10 off your first order at http://www.grubhub.com/dcsneakpeek.

GrubHub.com secures $2 million in Series B funding

Company plans to build the largest online network of restaurants that offer off premises dining options and create innovative products to improve delivery service

GrubHub.com, a leading online service for ordering restaurant takeout and delivery meals, announced today that it has secured a Series B round of financing for $2 million. The deal was co-led by Origin Ventures and Leo Capital, with earlier investor Amicus Capital participating.

The Series B funding will enable the company to build the largest online network of restaurants that deliver; and create new innovative products to enhance user experience and improve the quality of delivery service. GrubHub.com is currently operating in Chicago, IL., New York City, NY, San Francisco, CA, Boston, MA, and recently launched in Philadelphia, PA.

“Over the last year, GrubHub.com has successfully accelerated its sales growth in the top metro delivery markets.” said Randy Rissman, Leo Capital managing partner. “This investment will allow GrubHub.com to continue to build the technology and business team required to expand its customer reach geographically and product wise.”

GrubHub.com, which first launched in Chicago in 2004, secured Series A funding in 2007 through Amicus Capital, Origin Ventures and several angel investors, allowing the company to rapidly expand into the top three delivery markets – New York City, San Francisco and Boston.  The company has quickly outpaced its initial goals. Last year, GrubHub.com placed over $20 million in restaurant delivery orders and is currently partnered with over half of the delivery restaurants in all its existing markets.

“We’ve seen healthy growth over the last year even though the economy has been steadily going in the opposite direction,” said Matt Maloney, GrubHub.com co-founder and CEO. “With funding dollars drying up in the current economic climate, this recent round of financing is a show of confidence from the investment community. We plan to continue GrubHub.com’s rapid geographic expansion and launching innovative tools to make off premises dining easier and faster over the next year.”

GrubHub.com has been a pioneer in online ordering, developing the first automated phone confirmation system for online restaurant delivery orders and the first iPhone application for ordering food. The company was also at the forefront of organizing and listing all restaurant delivery information in each market it services. With the new funding, GrubHub.com will continue to enhance its product development and technology with additional smart phone applications and new interactive consumer-facing content on the site.

GrubHub.com is currently looking to add rock star employees to its growing team. For more information, please visit www.grubhub.com/careers/.
