Grubhub and Cartken Partner to Bring Robot Delivery to College Campuses

Robot delivery will be available on Ohio State University’s campus this fall

CHICAGO and OAKLAND, Calif.June 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub, the leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery platform on college campuses, and Cartken, a technology startup that specializes in self-driving, AI-powered robotics and delivery operations, announced a partnership today to bring robot delivery to college campuses. This delivery was piloted at Ohio State University this spring, and a full roll out is expected when students return to campus this fall.

Grubhub partners with more than 250 college campuses across the United States to give students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup. The partnership with Cartken for autonomous robot delivery builds on Grubhub’s existing campus offering and is a seamless fit for campus environments, which are notoriously difficult for cars to navigate.

“Robot delivery is exciting for students and helps provide even better service and innovative solutions to our campus partners,” said Eric Harper, senior director of campus environments at Grubhub. “We’ve worked with Ohio State University for years on the campus dining front, and they are always an early adopter of solutions that create efficiencies for their operations and improve the student experience. We look forward to supporting our university partners and responding to their unique delivery environments as we roll out this technology at other campuses in the coming months.”

Cartken’s robots navigate pavements, crosswalks and pedestrian paths within the campus area without human guidance. The robots use Cartken’s artificial intelligence (AI) and camera-based navigation and mapping technology, which the company developed for small autonomous vehicles to safely operate around pedestrians. Human override remains an option if necessary – for instance when a path is blocked – guaranteeing reliable operation and minimizing delivery delays. Cartken’s robots operate at up to three miles per hour on campus and handle various weather conditions, including rain and snow.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Grubhub to delight students and campus staff with robot delivery,” said Christian Bersch, CEO of Cartken. “This collaboration perfectly aligns with our mission to use robotics and AI technology to provide friction-free and environmentally sustainable delivery, and have robots serve the community. We are excited to scale alongside Grubhub and offer robot delivery to students on campuses across the country.”

“Robot delivery has been very popular on campus this past school year, validating our prediction that students would appreciate autonomous mobile delivery,” said Zia Ahmed, senior director of Student Life Dining Services at Ohio State University. “We are excited about the return of robots to campus, and we have been testing the Cartken robots during the spring semester with the same vision to lower the cost of delivery, reduce the time it takes to deliver food and enhance sustainability.”

Grubhub Launches Robot Delivery at the University of Arizona

Popular dining choices from the Student Union Memorial Center will be available for delivery via Yandex rovers

CHICAGO, Nov. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub, the leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery platform on college campuses, announced today that it’s deploying Yandex Self-Driving Group’s robot delivery technology, also called rovers, on the University of Arizona’s campus. This will be the second campus rolling out this delivery option from Grubhub and Yandex this fall, following Ohio State University.

More than 35,000 Wildcats will be able to order their favorite foods from on-campus dining locations – including IQ Fresh, Einstein Bros Bagels, On Deck Deli and Sabor – via the Grubhub app and have it delivered by one of the rovers. Yandex’s third-generation robots autonomously navigate pavements, campus crosswalks and pedestrian areas at speeds between 3 to 5 miles per hour during daytime and after dark and in various weather conditions, including rain, wind and heat. The rovers operate seven days a week, and students can request delivery to popular locations on campus including the dormitories, Main and Weaver library, McKale Center and more.

“We’ve been working with the University of Arizona’s dining team on efforts that drive the dining experience forward for the last eight years – from rolling out on-campus pickup and delivery to smart food lockers and our Ultimate ordering technology,” said Travis Price, senior manager, strategic partnerships at Grubhub. “The deployment of this robot delivery technology is an exciting way we’re providing innovative solutions to our partners, and we look forward to continuing to support the university’s dining operations.”

“Our ongoing partnership with Grubhub, and now Yandex, continues to strengthen and bring cool new innovation to our campus,” said Todd Millay, executive director of Arizona Student Unions. “We’re lucky to be the second school in the nation to launch with Grubhub’s new robot delivery service, and we can’t wait for our students to enjoy the convenience of this amazing technology.”

“We are excited to see just how quickly autonomous delivery robots are becoming an essential part of campus life,” said Peter Szelei, business development executive at Yandex SDG. Our robots are already delivering thousands of orders every week on college campuses — simplifying the daily lives of students, professors and anyone spending time on college campuses. The University of Arizona campus will feature our newly launched third-generation robots, and we hope the students will enjoy them.”

Features of the third-generation robots include removable batteries that take less than a minute to replace, additional cameras, a sleek new design that boasts increased robot capacity, LED headlights and softer suspension – making it easier for the robots to traverse challenging terrain, such as high curbs.

Grubhub and Yandex SDG Launch Robot Delivery Technology at The Ohio State University

The Big 10 school is the first campus to deploy Grubhub delivery via Yandex robots as students return for the fall semester

CHICAGO, Aug. 19, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Grubhub, the leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery platform on college campuses, and Yandex Self-Driving Group (SDG), a leading autonomous vehicles developer inside Yandex, one of Europe’s largest internet companies, will roll out delivery via Yandex’s robots at its first college campus — The Ohio State University (OSU).

50 Rovers will be initially rolling out on Ohio State’s campus
The Rovers can operate wherever people walk, including through water and snow

More than 60,000 hungry Buckeyes will be able to order their favorite foods from on-campus dining locations via the Grubhub app and have them delivered by one of 50 Yandex robots operating at the OSU campus in a fast and cost-effective way. The rovers operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Students can request robots to deliver food to every residence hall on campus as well as Thompson Library and Bricker Hall.

Yandex robots autonomously navigate pavements, campus crosswalks and pedestrian areas, which are notoriously challenging to reach by car. They move around a large university campus swiftly at 3 to 5 miles per hour during daytime and after dark and in various weather conditions, including rain and snow. The robots are spacious enough to fit a couple of coffees and a bagel sandwich, or multiple pizzas to share with friends, all while keeping the food at the right temperature.

“We’re excited to bring this cutting-edge and efficient delivery experience to students at The Ohio State University,” said Brian Madigan, vice president of corporate and campus partners at Grubhub. “OSU and Grubhub have worked together for years to offer students a variety of ways to enjoy the food they love on campus. Now we’re building on our efforts to enhance the dining experience through Yandex’s rover technology for quicker and easier deliveries.”

“By partnering with Grubhub, we can bring robotic delivery to some of the people who need it most – students, researchers and professors who are short on time,” said Peter Szelei, business development executive at Yandex SDG. “Not only do the rovers enhance the current food delivery options, but open new possibilities for smarter, better and faster dining. Imagine ordering morning coffee and grabbing it from a robot waiting at your doorstep as you head out to class, or studying in a park with friends and requesting a rover to roll up and deliver snacks. We’re thrilled to support making these possibilities a reality.”

“We pride ourselves on offering an exceptional dining experience to students, and we’re always looking to provide new ways to make getting food on campus as convenient as possible,” said Zia Ahmed, senior director, dining services at The Ohio State University.

Grubhub and Transact Partner to Offer Universities Expanded Off-Campus Meal Spending Programs for Students

Grubhub’s more than 300,000 restaurants nationwide are now included in Transact’s off-campus merchant program, providing students with more ways to use their CampusCash.

Grubhub, a leading food-ordering and delivery marketplace nationwide, and Transact, the leader in innovative payment solutions for a connected campus, announced today a partnership to extend Grubhub’s restaurant network to Transact’s CampusCash program. The partnership enables more student spending off campus, allowing universities to better adapt to hybrid learning environments and increase availability for contactless meal delivery and payment options.

Transact’s CampusCash program allows the 12 million students that use its mobile-centric campus technology at more than 1,300 universities across the country to use their student ID cards for cashless payments at university-approved off-campus merchants. Grubhub’s robust network of more than 300,000 restaurants is now included in Transact’s off-campus merchant program. This partnership will allow students to use their university-branded CampusCash account while they are away from campus, even visiting family and friends across the country.

“Universities had to quickly adapt technologies to keep operations running smoothly over the last 18 months as they pivoted to hybrid learning and contactless dining experiences,” said Brian Madigan, vice president of campus and corporate partners at Grubhub. “We’re excited to partner with Transact to help university partners stay nimble with continued flexible meal models and expand the off-campus dining options available to students, while driving orders to local restaurants in their communities.”

“We’re always looking for ways to increase the value of student ID cards, and partnering with Grubhub to provide students with additional off-campus dining options makes the cards even more indispensable,” said Erica Bass, vice president of product management at Transact. “By giving students more cashless options to choose from, we’re doubling down on our efforts to provide a superior dining and overall campus experience.”

Campuses with an existing Transact off-campus merchant program can easily add Grubhub as an off-campus merchant to their existing program to give students more dining options. Matt Camino, director of the PacificCard™ at the University of the Pacific, said, “Our experience adding Grubhub to our off-campus flex tender program has been seamless. We added Grubhub to fill a gap for students who do not have transportation off campus readily available. Our students are excited about the additional food options and delivery services. With students returning to campus fully, I’m looking forward to the positive impact that Grubhub and CampusCash off-campus program partnership will provide.”

Fairleigh Dickinson University piloted the partnership with Grubhub and CampusCash for its  Teaneck, N.J., and Madison, N.J., campuses. Associate Vice President for Auxiliary Services, Bob Valenti, said, “Fairleigh Dickinson University is always looking for new and creative ideas to better serve our students. New ideas are easily implemented when you have partners willing to work with you for the good of the overall student experience. We’re fortunate enough to have established relationships with Transact – CampusCash and Gourmet Dining. As the Covid-19 pandemic became increasingly more severe, we were forced to limit our hours and dining options available on campus. We were faced with the dilemma of not only keeping our students safe, but also of providing them options outside our normal hours. With Grubhub as part of our program, we were able to offer students expanded hours, increased popular and local dining options, and the flexibility they needed to get them through some very rough times. Our students were so pleased and we’re happy to announce the partnership will continue to be included in some of our meal plans for the upcoming academic year.”

Grubhub and Yandex SDG Partner for Robot Delivery on College Campuses

Yandex autonomous delivery robots will expand Grubhub’s delivery capabilities, including in campus areas only accessible by foot

Grubhub, the leading online and mobile food-ordering and delivery platform on college campuses, and Yandex Self-Driving Group (SDG), a leading autonomous vehicles developer inside Yandex, one of Europe’s largest internet companies, announced today a multi-year partnership where Yandex will be Grubhub’s robot delivery provider. Grubhub will now provide campus partners the ability to deploy Yandex robots on-site for faster, more cost-effective deliveries to complement its existing capabilities tailored for colleges and universities.

Marking its break into the U.S. market, Yandex’s delivery robots use the company’s proprietary self-driving technologies, including autonomous navigation of pavements, pedestrian areas, and crosswalks, making it possible to reach areas on campus not accessible by cars. Such functionality enables the robots to handle delivery tasks without human guidance, providing efficient automation for last mile logistics scenarios.

“Together with Yandex, we’re changing the way college students experience food delivery,” said Brian Madigan, vice president of corporate and campus partners at Grubhub. “We’re excited to offer these cost-effective, scalable and quick food ordering and delivery capabilities to colleges and universities across the country that are looking to adapt to students’ unique dining needs. While college campuses are notoriously difficult for cars to navigate, specifically as it relates to food delivery, Yandex robots easily access parts of campuses that vehicles cannot — effectively removing a major hurdle universities face when implementing new technology.”

Grubhub partners with more than 250 college campuses across the United States to give students the ability to integrate meal plans directly into their Grubhub account and access restaurants both on- and off-campus for delivery and pickup. With the Yandex SDG partnership, universities can bring this technology to their campuses and disrupt the traditional status quo dining experience. Grubhub campus dining also offers contact-free delivery, and students enrolled in campus dining at participating campuses are able to claim a free Grubhub + membership.

“We chose to partner with Grubhub for campus delivery because of Grubhub’s unparalleled reach into college campuses across the United States, as well as the flexibility and strength of their ordering platform,” said Dmitry Polishchuk, CEO of Yandex Self-Driving Group. “We are delighted to deploy dozens of our rovers, taking the next step in actively commercializing our self-driving technology in different markets across the globe.”

Yandex robots, called rovers, are able to perform last-mile deliveries on pre-mapped areas; operate during daylight, night, average snow and rain; navigate autonomously between pick up and drop off points; and use regulated and unregulated crosswalks. As the delivery robot approaches its final destination, the diner receives a push notification with the status update, and when it arrives, they open the hatch of the rover via the Grubhub app. The diner then takes the food out of the opened rover, closes the hatch and lets it proceed to the next delivery.

“As we looked for a robot delivery partner, we recognized that we not only needed best-in-class technology, but the resources and scale to meet the unique demands of our campus clients,” said Sean Ir, director of strategic partnerships at Grubhub. “Yandex was the clear choice, and together we will serve colleges and universities across the country better than ever before.”

Grubhub and Yandex’s partnership will be available to universities for the Fall semester. For more information on Grubhub campus dining, please click here.

GrubHub and Spoon University Analysis Highlights Differences in College Eating Habits

Student Food Preferences Deviate from the Norm, From Ordering Times to Caffeine Consumption

CHICAGO, Aug. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — With class back in session for students across the country, GrubHub Inc., the nation’s leading online and mobile food-ordering service, teamed up with Spoon University, an online food publication and community for college students, to unwrap collegiate takeout habits. Together, they confirmed that drastic differences in eating habits exist between college students and the general population, especially when it comes to caffeine and ordering hours.

For a comprehensive understanding of student diners, GrubHub analysts examined orders placed by students from hundreds of college campuses during the 2013-2014 school year. While some of the data confirms that traditional takeout foods like pizza, wings and salads are popular across the board, other findings highlight the differences between student diners and average GrubHub diners. The analysis shows that college diners:

  • Caffeinate creatively: Energy drinks are 83 percent more commonly ordered by college diners, while coffee is 15 percent less commonly ordered.
  • Start the day later: Early-morning orders (between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.) are 66 percent less common for college diners.
  • Keep it cool: Spicy orders are 26 percent less common among college students than non-college diners.
  • Embrace being omnivores: Vegetarian and vegan orders are 25 percent less common among college diners.
  • Ask for the works: Even as restaurants look to add healthier options to their menus, healthy substitutions and special requests are still 23 percent less common for college diners.
  • Skip the sweets: Dessert orders are 18 percent less common among college diners.
  • Burn the midnight oil: Late-night orders (placed between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.) are 100 percent more common among college diners.

“The habits displayed by college diners, and the takeout restaurants that cater to this population, help illustrate the inherent differences between college culture and the rest of the nation,” said GrubHub Inc. president, Jonathan Zabusky. “It’s great to see that students take advantage of GrubHub’s convenience and flexibility to help fuel college life.”

Takeout Preferences of College Students
In addition to identifying key trends in college takeout, GrubHub’s analysis shows that certain foods are ordered by college students more than the typical GrubHub diner, with traditional takeout favorites like Italian and Chinese ranking highest.

  • Calzone – 150 percent more commonly ordered
  • Chicken with Broccoli – 114 percent more commonly ordered
  • General Tso’s Chicken – 92 percent more commonly ordered
  • Sesame Chicken – 88 percent more commonly ordered
  • Dumplings – 62 percent more commonly ordered
  • Wings – 56 percent more commonly ordered
  • Chicken Parmesan – 36 percent more commonly ordered
  • Sweet and Sour Chicken – 34 percent more commonly ordered
  • Wonton Soup – 19 percent more commonly ordered
  • Fries – 19 percent more commonly ordered

“With school and social calendars booked around-the-clock, college students often find themselves without the time or ingredients (not to mention a kitchen) to prepare food for themselves – so ordering takeout is a huge part of their lifestyles,” said Spoon University co-founder, Mackenzie Barth. “It’s no surprise that students order comfort foods at home and in the dorms, but as they learn more about the options available for takeout, we expect to see them making healthier and more adventurous choices when ordering from GrubHub.”

Leading the Pack in Campus Order Habits
